No doubt about it. Ponytails are totally swinging with style. Yes, ladies, your signature “hitting the gym” hairdo is still being sported everywhere from the runways of Fashion Week to nights out on the town. But did you know that the color of your mane could be squashing this sassy style’s potential? Marie Robinson, Clairol Color Director and celebrity colorist, says glossy, beautiful hair color instantly makes a ponytail look polished and put together. Here are her tips for achieving a perfectly colored pony:

  • If you have highlights, make sure they are “fresh” around the hairline. Consider amping things up with a slightly bolder style, like a ballerina bun a la Lauren Conrad.

  • If you’re a bright, buttery blonde, your pony will pop against black or charcoal coats and clothing. To bring out color even more, try a bright pink or royal blue satin ribbon. It's a feminine look that's oh-so-Mad-Men. (Betty Draper would be proud.)

  • If you have dark hair, it’s a bit easier to get your strands glowing. Try warming up your current shade with a bit of shimmer. Robinson is a fan of Clairol Natural Instincts in Cinnaberry. If you’re a salon kind of girl, have a heart-to-heart with your stylist. Be sure to bring some pictures of your hair icons.

  • If you’re a deep red or auburn, Robinson says your hair color tends to fade quickly. Unfortunately, that means grays (or roots in general) can make an unwelcome appearance when your hair is up high. A simple trick is to use a root touch-up system or pen to mask the situation.

  • If your hair is natural in color, or a dull brown, be adventurous with your style! Robinson recommends going ombre. Simply dip your ends into a pale hue (this is best left to a professional). The lighter ends will show off your pony without a major color commitment. And if you decide that ombre is not for you, you can always chop it off!
