When packing for the beach this summer, it’s important to remember the essentials without weighing down your bag! Heather Adessa, hair and makeup artist, helped us choose what to bring, so you can look fab all day and night!
Hydration is key! Adessa says that moisturizer is definitely a beach beauty essential. That's because you always risk dry skin at the beach. After swimming or showering, apply some moisturizer with SPF to freshen your look and protect your face. If your skin is naturally dry, go for Kiehl’s Ultra Face Moisturizer SPF 15 ($19-$50). Oily skin? Then grab Mary Kay TimeWise Moisturizer SPF 15 ($22) for a light, airy cover. Love your regular moisturizer? Adessa suggests mixing a drop of sunscreen into your lotion – skimping on SPF is never smart!

A little makeup never hurt! The key with beach makeup is to be comfortable and natural. Don’t leave the house without your SPF infused lip gloss. The skin on your lips is thinner than the rest of your body, and it can burn easily. When packing makeup, make sure to leave all gel and wax based products at home – they’ll melt! Powders are a safer choice, so throw in a bronzer or translucent version to even out potential blotchiness and redness.

Think travel-size or double duty. If you can’t part with a particular product, Adessa suggests grabbing samples of your favorite brands at department stores. They're free and travel size! Also, look for products that do ‘double duty,’ like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer ($40). It functions as a moisturizer and foundation, and won’t clog your pores. Another great pick MAC Cream Color Base in Fabulush ($16.50), which can be used on eyes, cheeks, AND lips to create a natural summer glow.

Ditch the scary beach hair! Sun exposure and salt water can dry out hair. After a day at the beach, run a little leave-in conditioner through your locks, then twist hair into a bun. The leave-in conditioner provides hydration. Remember - dry shampoo and salt water is not a good combo! Adessa says it can zap your hair of even more moisture! Whether you plan to hit the town or not, be sure to throw in a few bobby pins and hair elastics, as well as a travel-sized brush – a ballerina bun or pony is a quick fix, too! If you like to use hairspray, scoop up a travel size at the drugstore.

Try out a transitional outfit! Don’t think beach clothes can double as going out clothes? Think again! The best way to keep your beach bag light is to pack pieces that can take you from the sand to the club scene! Look for chic cover-ups that can double as dresses, flip flops and sandals that are durable, but dressy, and a fabulous beach bag to use as your purse! Airy fabrics, like cotton and linen, will also lighten your load.
