Thought you could retire that pleated skirt? Think again! Fresh folded fabric has been popping up everywhere, so we asked Marissa Rubin, Senior Market Editor of PEOPLE StyleWatch, to give us some tips on the trend:
Pleats are officially back! Which stars have been spotted wearing pleats this season? Taylor Swift, Rose Byrne, Carey Mulligan, Olivia Palermo, and Sarah Jessica Parker have all been spotted in pleated dresses and skirts. Prada, Jason Wu, Peter Som, and Diane Von Furstenberg runways have all featured pleats as well.
What are the best styles of pleats to look for? The best styles (and the freshest styles) to look for are the new, small, sharp accordion pleats that can be found on dresses, flippy miniskirts, full knee-length skirts, and long maxiskirts.
How about fabric choices? Does the type of fabric make a difference? Pleats are coming in all types of fabrications this season—from leather (which feels new and modern) to silk, chiffon, and cotton. Just make sure to keep in mind all fabrics lay/drape differently on the body, aka beware of the sheer factor and the cling factor. Lighter fabrics might be a little see-through, so remember to layer if necessary!
Which types of clothing featuring pleats are generally the most flattering? When deciding which pleated silhouette will be the most flattering, your figure is the determining factor. If you are busty, then try wearing a pleated skirt to draw the eye downward and avoid volume on top. Smaller chest or hips? Then try out a dress or skirt with full pleats to enhance your silhouette. If you are curvy or pear shaped, look for skirts or dresses with smaller pleats (in a darker hue) at both the waist and hip line. These pleats will A-line out to a fuller pleat at the bottom hem.
How can you wear pleats without looking outdated or "old"? Actually the biggest pleat trend comes from a resurgence in the 50s era look—so it's okay to reference a retro vibe with button-down blouses that are buttoned all the way to the collar, or fitted knits! However, if you prefer a more modern look, pair a pleated skirt with a t-shirt or slouchy knit and a statement accessory, such as a chunky necklace or bracelet.

What colors should you look for? It's an anything goes season for color, so it's really more about personal preference. Pastels and natural hues were a huge runway trend, as were bright, saturated colors. Whether you go for bold and bright or soft and sweet, pleats are definitely the trend to experiment with this season!
