At the recent 2011 Emmy Awards several celebrities were wearing their hair in long wavy locks and chic updos. Both looks have been popular for quite some time, and both are fairly easy to do. The thing to remember about today's hairstyles is you don't have to have each and every hair in place. Messy is good. Long Layers
The first thing you need is a great haircut. Layers will free up the natural wave of your hair giving you plenty of volume if you like the long wavy look. If your hair is very curly, you may want to use a flat iron first and then hot rollers to keep the frizz down and get the soft curl you want. Section out your hair first to make it easy to handle and apply some heat protecting product. This will keep your hair from getting singed or damaged.
Next wrap your hair horizontally onto your curling iron or roller and take random sections to give you a carefree, less structured look. Let your hair cool completely curl before you mess with it. This will lock the curl in. Once it is cool, your can gently brush your hair out for a soft smooth wavy look, or use your fingers and a bit of styling paste to define your curls. A quick spritz of hairspray will keep everything neat, and you're ready to go.
Messy Updo
A messy updo is one of the hottest styles this season. You can use a French twist, a roll, a bun or anything in between. Braids also look great for a messy updo. You may want to start with day old hair, hair that hasn't been washed for a day, to make it easier to work with. If you work with newly washed hair, it can be too slick and hard to manage. To get Katie Holmes' look simply gather your hair up in a high ponytail, and create a messy bun by wrapping the ends of your hair around the ponytail and secure it with hair pins. You can add some hair clips or a pretty hairband. Both are on trend and add an extra touch to any style.
