Denver Jewelry Designers Help Feed The Soul
Denver Jewelry Designers Help Feed The Soul
Pearls hand-knotted on leather with a Peruvian opal pendant by Christy Lea Payne. www.kismetaccessories.com

What is it about jewelry that makes a woman’s heart skip a beat? There have been times I have let out a little squeal when I see a piece that I love.  The oldest ornamental bead dates back 82,000 years ago in Morocco and throughout history, jewelry and its designers have played a key role in identifying different cultures, highlighting unique craftsmanship, and building livelihoods and industries. I’m fascinated by all this because jewelry is not a necessity. People need clothes, but not baubles! This fact reinforces my opinion that jewelry is truly an art-form.   Must I have that necklace to keep me warm? No, but I need it to feed my soul! You’ll be happy to know that Denver is filled with many talented jewelry designers.  Here are seven of my favorites:

  • Christy Lea Payne:  Be careful here, because you can’t wear just one piece of CLP’s jewelry.  Not only are her rustic sterling, stone, and leather creations addictive, they wear well together.   As you grow your collection, you’ll start to look like you’re ready to go to lunch with Ralph Lauren or Robert Redford, or both!
  • Sarah Bridger:  Sarah will capture your heart with big beaded necklaces that even the most petite can pull off. She uses vintage findings, gorgeous stones and colorful ribbon in her unique and fabulous collection. For pieces from both Sarah Bridger and Christy Lea Payne, head on over to Kismet in the Highlands or The Streets at Southglenn. Fall collection coming soon! www.kismetaccessories.com .
  • Lindsay Bloom:  Originally from L.A., we’re oh so fortunate to have Lindsay Bloom hang her hat in Denver. She’s known for her beautiful, timeless silhouettes, Swarovski crystal earrings and delicate wire wrapping! Visit www.shopshineboutique.com .
  • Ashley Schenkien:  Classic, simple, sparkling loveliness. Ashley Schenkien is the designer to turn to when you want to find your favorite everyday necklace. Or bracelet. Or earrings! Visit www.asjewelrydesign.com .
  • Ink Jewelry by Kristen Rankin and Ina Gustafsen:  Two minds think alike—these talented ladies have been partners for years and can shape, solder, cast, bead and hammer with the best of them.  Don’t miss their most impressive spoon bracelet, which is stamped with inspirational sayings like, “Leap and the net will appear.” www.etsy.com/shop/inkets .
  • The Woods by Shawn Hecox:  Ahhh, The Woods.  If you want to treat yourself, check out The Woods incredible collection of ebony beads with diamond laden charms (insert me, squealing now!).  www.osterjewelers.com/jewelry/designers/TheWoods .

So the next time you are trying to decide whether or not you need those stunning wire-wrapped earrings you saw in the window of your favorite boutique, remember, it’s not about the need, it’s about the LOVE! (Go on, buy them, Cleopatra did!)

Shana Colbin Dunn is the accessory-obsessed owner of the fun, fashionable and funky boutique Kismet, with locations in the Historic Denver Highlands and in Southglenn.  www.kismetaccessories.com
