DIY Hair Treatments to Get You Through Norfolk Chills
This is a mask I once tried... it was a disaster because I was sans a blender.

Ok Norfolk gals, who’s upset that it’s cooling off way faster than last year?  I’m upset, particularly because the warm weather lasted until at least the end of October in 2010.  My guess is that we’re in for a pretty cold winter.  I’m a spring-summery type of girl, so I’m not too excited.  However, because I’m a huge hair freak, I know how to keep my hair hydrated during these wintery months.  Aside from man-made tools that damage the hair, the weather can also be a great factor that determines your hairs health.  Take a minute, and ask yourself some things.  Does your hair blow in the piercing cold wind?  Does your hair ever get tangled or caught in your scarf?  These are factors that can easily break hair.  Cold temps dry your hair out, and tangles cause breaks with ease.  Now, do you really want to be a winter hair casualty?  I don’t think so!  Who does?  So, I’ve derived some of my favorite do-it-yourself hair treatments that you can whip up right in your own kitchen!  And mind you, these treatments can be done on any type of hair.  It all serves one purpose: to nourish and protect your mane!

  • Melt coconut oil using warm water and place into an applicator bottle.   Apply to scalp and hair generously.  Leave on for thirty minutes BEFORE washing hair and conditioning as normal.  Coconut oil leaves the hair manageable, and adds elasticity to your strands.  It also softens hair and gets rid of dandruff.
  • Use extra virgin olive oil as a hot oil treatment.  After washing your hair, apply a quarter-sized amount to hair and comb through to distribute.  Let sit for five minutes, then condition and style as normal.
  • Argan oil performs miraculously as a leave in treatment.  My favorite is One’N’Only, but you can also buy raw argan oil from certain websites.  After washing and conditioning, apply argan oil to wet hair and wrap in a towel.  Leave your hair in the towel to dry for about twenty minutes before styling or blowdrying.
  • Egg yolks, honey, olive oil, and bananas together work well to moisturize and protect the hair shaft.
  • Make your own hair mayonnaise!  Mix real mayonnaise, an egg, olive oil, and a little peppermint oil to stimulate blood flow to the scalp.  Sit with a processing cap on for thirty minutes so that the mix will penetrate the scalp.

Be experimental!  Whip ‘em up!  They only take a second and you’ll save a few bucks in the process.  Now that you’ve saved yourself some money, go splurge on a nice pair of shoes!
