It’s a new month full of free Houston events and activities. Here is a snapshot of a few things to do for free this Labor Day weekend with friends and family:

Rock to the Latin beat

Enjoy Austin-based Latin funk orchestra Grupo Fantasma, Friday at 8 pm. Their music style draws from influences including cumbia, salsa, old-school funk, reggae and more. Free tickets for reserved covered seating are available on performance day from 10:30 am – 1 pm at the Miller box office. Miller Outdoor Theatre is located in Hermann Park.

Decorate clay tiles

Families can express their creativity at this month’s free Hands-on Houston activity at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Saturday 11 am – 3 pm. Kids will decorate tiles of 2×2 or 3×3-inch clay. Take your unfired piece home or leave it to be fired and pick it up later. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is located at 4848 Main Street.

Browse free museums

It’s Bank of America’s first weekend freebie for cardholders. Get free admission Saturday & Sunday at Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Zoo, and Museum of Fine Arts.  Free admission for individual cardholder, not children.

Shop local in the Heights

It’s the Heights 1st Saturday this weekend, featuring dozens of local artists and craftsmen. It’s the last month for evening summer hours: 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Be on the look-out for food trucks, too! Find all the fun at 548 W. 19th!

Jam to country tunes

It’s Opry on the Square featuring Top 40 and classic country songs at Sugar Land Town Square. The evening is Saturday 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

Relax with a concert in the park

Houston performing group Mercury Baroque presents Mozart Under the Stars on September at 8 p.m. featuring Eine Kleine Nacht Musik, Serenata Nottuma and aDivertimento for strings. Free tickets for reserved covered seating are available on performance day from 10:30 am – 1 pm at the Miller box office. Miller Outdoor Theatre is located in Hermann Park.

Shake your hips

If you love to move like a hula dancer, then check out the Discover Hoop Dance class at Discovery Green.Folks can shake their hips with hula hoops on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Some hoops are provided, but bring your own if you can!  Discovery Green is downtown at 1500 McKinney. photo: Katya Horner

Experience Bollywood

Enjoy the song, glitz, dance, and glamour of Bollywood Blast with an entertaining evening of fun for the entire family on Sunday at 8 p.m. Free tickets for reserved covered seating are available on performance day from 10:30 am – 1 pm at the Miller box office. Miller Outdoor Theatre is located in Hermann Park.

Play at the Children’s Museum

It’s another Target Free First Sunday this weekend at the Children’s Museum of Houston. It’s a great chance to check out some of the special exhibits including Help Wanted. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. The museum is located at 1500 Binz. Admission is normally $8 each.
