We’re all looking for the next hot thing, although in this case, it’s not the “hot” thing, but the cold thing that’s caught our attention. This summer all the rage is about frozen yogurt, or froyo, as it’s most commonly known. This tasty treat has taken DC by storm and we totally understand why.
Generally healthier than their other frozen counterparts and offering a wide range of fruity flavors and toppings, it’s no wonder this summer treat has captured our taste buds.
If you haven’t tried Pinkberry already, it’s about time you did. And if you have, this summer Pinkberry is offering a series of new seasonal combos centered around their strawberry froyo flavor. Our favorite was the Strawberry Crunch, which consists of strawberry froyo, honey granola and almond flakes. However, we encourage you to try all of the flavors!
With one location in Georgetown -- 3288 M Street -- and another in Dupont Circle -- 1213 Connecticut Ave NW -- you should really make it over to at least one them this summer!
Another tasty DC spot is Frozenyo. Their flavors range from Greek yogurt to pistachio to our favorite, peach mango tart. So throw on some sliced almonds and raspberries, and you’ll be in for a real treat! This particular chain has stores littered around the DC, Maryland and Virginia area, so refer to their website to locate the one most convenient for you.
A classic local DC hang is Mr. Yogato. Along with their traditional flavors, Mr. Yogato also offers two flavors of the week, one of which is currently pink-guav andy. So head on over this week so you can test it out, although we’d love to see what they’re serving up in the weeks to come, so if you test out a new flavor let us know what you thought!
It’s based on 1515 17th Street NW, so head on over on a hot afternoon for a tasty treat!
But if none of these have tickled your fancy, Red Mango might just do the trick. It offers all the traditional froyo flavors in both tart and sweet with a wide selection of both fruit and nut toppings. However, Red Mango also serves smoothies and parfait yogurt, which we also highly recommend. Furthermore, on a rainy day, Red Mango has just the thing; their Artisan Hot Chocolate is a must.
With several stores stationed just outside of DC, their website will guide you towards its most convenient location.
For something a little different, try out SweetGreen. This sweet spot is unique for a variety of reasons. SweetGreen offers one flavor; tart, but with three toppings, all of which are locally grown, fresh and delicious. This simple approach to froyo is not the only thing SweetGreen has going for it; on the menu is also a number of salads, all of which also come from local farmers and in interesting yet delightful combinations. Ingredients include avocados, figs, chickpeas, cranberries, walnuts and the like. Their dedication to local produce coupled with their 'back-to-basics' approach results in the unexpected; fashionable and fiercely flavorful freshness that is in no way basic.
With numerous locations dotted all over DC, check their website to find which is most convenient for you.
So next time the kids are asking for some ice cream, opt for froyo instead so you can enjoy your dessert without any of the guilt afterwards!
