What not to order when you're eating out

Going out to eat at a big chain restaurant is already blurring the lines of managing a healthy diet and fully splurging. No matter what you order, the calories, fat, and sodium are incredibly high. Once you add on appetizers, drinks, and those larger-than-life desserts, you’ve eaten a couple of days’ worth of calories. You know it’s true as you waddle back to your car and pray for the forgiveness of stretchy pants awaiting you at home.
Trim the fat, literally, by skipping the worst appetizers on popular restaurant menus.
If you’re that hungry by the time you get seated, order a small garden salad with a vinaigrette dressing on the side and a glass of water. They’ll fill you up and satisfy you in a healthy way so that 1) you don’t go nuts on these crazy high-calorie appetizers, and 2) can eat a moderate amount of your entrée with plenty to take home.
Here's what to X off your list if you are eating out and choose an appetizer to start off the meal.

One serving of this deep-fried squid is 70% of your entire day’s worth of calories! The vegetables, while the best part of this dish, hardly make up for all that’s lost in 88 grams of fat!
Olive Garden Calamari

The fried squid takes the calorie-offender cake again. Squid is a decadent seafood dish that can be enjoyed grilled, but once it’s battered and fried any semblance of nutrition is burned up. Stick to the endless bowl of salad, here.

This platter offers four appetizers in one – and each more gooey, fried, and fattening that the last. Fried cheese sticks, spinach and artichoke dip, cheese and bacon quesadillas, and boneless wings dish up 500 calories more than you should eat for the day.

New rule of thumb – no samplers or platters when ordering an appetizer. These things wrack up the calories and fat and leave you feeling like you’re at a smorgasbord of fried and fatty food, which in this case includes Chicken Quesadillas, Steak Nachos and Chicken Flautas, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and original queso.
