Hey Hamptons: Visit a Fair! | Fun Stuff

Hey Hamptons: Visit a Fair!
Hey Hamptons: Visit a Fair!

There are few summer experiences as incredibly fun as a day at the fair. Think farm animals, Ferris wheels, and deep fried Twinkies: fairs are delight for the senses.

Detroit, Michigan claims bragging rights to hosting the first fair in the United States, back in 1849. Forget the cotton candy— the original fairs started as livestock competitions, venues for displaying farm equipment and skill contests in areas like jams, pies and quilts.

Today’s fairs have expanded to include carnival rides, games and music and entertainment—many times featuring top-notch performers. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the fair. So make a day of it!

Tips for Making the Most of a day at the Fair

1. Leave the driving to them: Many fairs offer special park and ride busses for fairgoers (note: leave the car and stress of driving behind).

2. Plan your visit: Take a few minutes to check out your local Fair’s website and make of note of the must-see exhibits and rides for your family.

3. More fun for less money: Check the websites of local businesses partnering with your local fair for discounts or tickets.  The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo for example has a whole website page dedicated to special offers and hot promotion.

4. Stay hydrated: Make sure to bring a bottle of water or buy some there.

5. Don’t forget the sunscreen: It may be late summer but it’s still summer. You want to leave the venue with great memories—not a sunburn.

6.  Consider a weekday visit: According to Karen LaFlamme from the Puyallup Fair in Washington State, “Weekdays are quieter and easier to get around, so if you have a flexible schedule, give it a try. It will become a favorite for you.

7. Pack your patience: Popular rides and exhibits can get busy. Relax and realize crowds are sometimes part of the experience.
