When it comes to cleaning out my closet, I have never been a fan of the old adage "if you don't use it, lose it." I can always justify keeping an item based on the fact that fashion is cyclical and there will be one day when I will most certainly need a polyester paisley shirt (right?!). Unfortunately, this same logic lands people on Hoarders, so when I learned of a clothing swap happening at Golden Rule, one of Portland's most unique shops, I felt ready to edit my wardrobe for the first time in months. The one thing that could motivate me to purge my closet? The opportunity to refill it for free, of course!

Golden Rule is a store unlike any other I've experienced. Described on their website as "a social experiment in creativity and commerce," the shop is special in that each month, the clothing and accessories in stock change, much like the artwork in a gallery. Last week was their first Naked Lady Party, a common name given to shin-digs where women can try on and trade items no longer worn for ones that are more appealing. The premise is to create a nurturing environment based on the notion that one lady's trash is another lady's treasure and that instead of purchasing new goods, it is often more resourceful to come together as a community and swap.

The evening began at 7 p.m. with a small crowd gathered around a pile of clothing that was built higher by the arrival of each bag-toting lady. After the green light was given to dive in, the group started to grab pieces out of the abyss and try them on, either deciding 'yea' or 'nay,' or in many instances recommending that a friend give the item a chance. The atmosphere was welcoming and conducive to easy conversation. I arrived with two heaping bags of clothes and after about an hour with my fellow pillagers, I left with only one - which was not even close to being stuffed, thank you very much.

The pile was definitely dented when I left, however new clothes arrived steadily the entire evening. After the weekend, Golden Rule donated all remaining garments to p:ear, a Portland non-profit dedicated to helping homeless youth. You all know how I love fashion with a purpose

I'm already preparing a bag for Golden Rule's next Naked Lady Party on Thursday, May 26th. Hope to see you and your discarded duds there. View more photos of the fun here. If you look closely, you might see a familiar face (wink, wink).
