Holiday Dresses for Every Occasion
Holiday Dresses for Every Occasion

The winter season is full of festive occasions where a holiday dress is often called for. Any event from a family or work Christmas party to a nice evening out with the boyfriend’s parents call for a different look - and of course we can’t forget New Years! As the 2011 year wraps up and 2012 shortly awaits we looked into the dress trends that best fit these occasions and this winter season.

A winter/holiday dress should encompass vibes that give off a sophisticated and effortless look. Connie Marsh, trend director of Dots Fashion, gives us some insight on trends for holiday dresses this season.

Red and cobalt. These are the colors that speak to the season and give us new and exciting looks. A deep romantic burgundy replaces the little black dress look and cobalt is strong and elegant. Jade is another jewel tone emerging this year.

Black looks newest in lace, sparkle and glitter. It’s lace and sequins that are giving the classic black dress a pop. Skirts or shirts with lace and sequin can be incorporated with other colorful pieces and styled in many ways. Mixing a solid, vibrant color with a black piece and accessories (chunky gems and feathers) can keep an outfit fresh, sophisticated and fun. A lace shrug and glitter pumps are popular compliments that go lovely with winter-styles.

Maxi. Shorter cocktail dresses have always been the go-to dress but this year maxi lengths take it to a new level. Knee-lengths are also very popular for all ages. High-waisted and chiffon skirts go great for the winter look and can be worn with sweaters and longer sleeves to stay warm in the cooler temperatures. Try your local Anthropologie for styles like the Winterbloom Maxi Dress.

Chunky and layered. Layers, layers, layers, sweater dresses paired with a sweaters and belts, scarfs and knee-highs create a winter-like boho look and can still look classy and cozy for a party or evening out.

These 2011 holiday dress trends don’t make for just individual pieces - they look great together too. Anne Hathaway looked elegant wearing a knee length netted overlay (chiffon) dress that sparkled and encompassed winter in a snowy off-white.
