Hamptons: A Holiday for Books | Fun Stuff

Hamptons: A Holiday for Books
Hamptons: A Holiday for Books

It’s a brand new year and what a better way to start it than with a good book. January marks National Book Month, and is perhaps the best month to curl up with a new or favorite book.

Whether you are treating yourself to reading your favorite books again or with joining a book club you can get lost in books all month long with these fun ways to celebrate.

Joining a Book Club

Joining a book club is a great way to remain dedicated to reading each week and an awesome way to meet fellow book lovers. Usually, a new book is chosen every month and is discussed throughout the gatherings.

Now the East Hampton Library is offering an online book club where you receive in your email a five-minute selection from a chapter of a book. By the end of the week, you'll have read 2-3 chapters. If you are interested in a traditional book club Suffolk County Book Worms read and discuss one book each month.

Throwing a Book Party

Not your normal party theme, but a great one - get your friends together to have some snacks, drinks and a good read. It’s a great activity for a down day and can be at your home, local library or a bookstore.

Reading with Your Family

You can use this occasion to get your family involved in books! Set a reading time each night and read aloud with your family, husband or kids. Maybe decide on reading a chapter or two each night with everyone. This is a time the family can look forward to  each day. You can build forts or make hot chocolate to make the reading time cozy and looked forward to each night.

Swapping Books with Friends

Some of the best books I’ve read have been recommended from my best friends. You can switch your favorite for their favorite, or explore a neighbors, family members or friends house for books that are lying around and collecting dust. Or you can also organize a book swap with a group of gals.

Getting Yourself a New Book

In honor of the month go get yourself a new book. Have you heard about a good one lately? Do you want a new series? How about an e-reader like the Kindle or Nook? Go for it. The local bookstore is great, or you can even buy books online for your laptop or e-reader. (I love my kindle!)

On Saturday, January 14th the Hampton Bay’s Public Library is having a book sale for all ages - and if you have any gently used books you can donate them here as well.

No matter how you celebrate take the time to rediscover your love for reading this month.
