Spring is in the air, bringing to mind flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. One great way to embrace the renewal of spring is to start a garden.  Whether you’re looking to plant flowers in your yard or grow produce to end up on your kitchen table, gardening can be a fun and productive hobby. With a few hours and some supplies, you could have a garden started in no time.

The first step to growing plants is to pick a location. A small plot in your backyard could be a good place for a vegetable patch.  For flowers, an area near your door could really brighten up your front lawn. Gardening is definitely a possibility without yard space too.  A pot and a sunny windowsill can work just as well for certain plants, like tomatoes or some types of flowers.

Once you’ve figured out where you want to plant, its time to figure out what you want to plant. If you’re using pots, you can grow anything that works well indoors.  If you’ve opted to plant outside, you need to assess the amount of sunlight plants would get and what type of soil you have.  From there, you can browse online or at a local gardening store to see what types of plants would work best for you.

As soon as the seeds are planted, all you have to do is water and wait. Besides occasional weeding, small gardens don’t actually require too much time.  Taking care of a garden can be as easy as a few minutes a day to water and an hour on a weekend to pull out weeds. You might be surprised how much fun it can be to spend time outside and get your hands a little dirty, especially when the fruits of your labor start to pay off.  Nothing tastes better than salsa made with fresh homegrown tomatoes, and who doesn’t like being greeted with the smell of flowers when they walk outside?
