Sailing & Sloshing into Jazzy Art | Fun Stuff

It’s a busy month for San Francisco so are you ready to rumble? Yes, I thought so. Let the games begin!

So I’ve never really been a fan of art festivals, boating events or anything including a water board and ping pong but since I moved to San Francisco about 7 years ago, I’ve become a bit of a super geek fan of all things painting by numbers and sail boats. Maybe it’s something to do with being in such a small, compact city where anything and everything is within walking distance or a short drive away. I’ve watched Sailing Week from friend’s roofs in the Marina, jived up and down Fillmore Street Jazz Festival, still got mild tinnitus from North Beach Jazz Fest and quite regularly gallop down to Embarcadero for their ongoing art festivals. I never thought I’d be the person to say ‘oh, how do water colors of a lake make me feel sea sick, it’s so life-like’ and ‘oh my, that yacht really floats our boat.’ But I’ve done it! It’s not just a case of hopping to a festival and drinking your way through it (even though that’s a sure bet in this city), but more of a cultural involvement in supporting local businesses and being part of a bigger action plan that only San Fran can do in style and wino panache.

The Tiburon Art Festival from August 25-26 will be rocking north of Golden Gate Bridge this year. I adore Tiburon and with its quaint little town, that occasionally reminds me of a place that could easily get eaten up by water in a dramatic movie, it’s held its own. Yes, positive thinking throughout this article is a (must minus tornados)!

30th Anniversay San Francisco Jazz Festival will be alive and kickin’ it big time from August 25 right through December so you have absolutely zero excuse to say you’re busy. If you’re so hectic between August and December, you need to get a life and get out more. No one likes a stranger as a friend so put away your laptop/iPad and get to one of the brilliant festival events this year. No moaning that you’re sick of trumpets!

Sloshball! It’s San Francisco’s 4th Annual August 25 and it’ll be messy. No need to train in advance or get fit for this. As long as you can gently trot from one base to another without spilling your drink, you’re as good as anyone else who hasn’t a clue what they’re doing. It’s the best sport ever with rules changing hourly. I’m also a big believer that spilt beer is good for grass. I just need to scientifically prove it.

America’s Cup is coming to San Fran August 21-26 and aren’t we happy! I heard recently that the America’s Cup’s never been held in America before and I find this quite odd yet then again, the World Series is only in the US so it’s a bit of a ying-yang type of situation. Either way, make friends with anyone who lives in Marina, Cow Hollow or the north side of Pacific Heights (preferably with a roof deck). If you don’t know anyone, the pressure’s on to find someone who does. This is your second warning to put down your laptop/iPad. Move it!

Now you’re set to go through August and with beer, boats, jazz and art, this should take you right through to mid September of conversation points. No more ‘I’m bored and I have no life’ topics nor a peep of ‘there’s never anything to do in SF.’ (even though I’ve not heard anyone say that…ever. Not even a Facebook post or a Tweet).

Are you on it? Are you in it to win it? Good – get your A-game on and remember what you wear to each of the above events. No one likes to see a gal in the same outfit twice. Wearing the same outfit more than once in public is extremely 2008, unless you’re wearing all black and then you’re as good as gold! Talking about Gold, ParaOlympics start in a few days. Watch it. It’ll inspire you and remind you that your bit of cellilute on your rear is zip compared to what these athletes have gone through. LOVE IT!
