Planning a vacation? Here's some information that may help you decide where to go....or rather where not to go. TripAdvisor.com recently released it's list of the "World's Worst Pickpocket Desinations." The list is based on "the number of times travelers used the term pickpocket in their TripAdvisor reviews" over the last 12 months. Not necessarily, a scientific study....but scientific or not, who wants to spend vacation time calling banks and creditors, trying to make sure your money and identity aren't stolen.
So what cities are pickpocket heaven according to TripAdvisor? Some of the most popular destinations in the world!
- Barcelona, Spain
- Rome, Italy
- Paris, France
- Madrid, Spain
- Athens, Greece
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Costa Brava (Alicante Province), Spain
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Tenerife, Spain
- London, England
Interesting rundown, but I have to admit, Barcelona and Paris are still at the top of my vacation wish-list. A little savvy will help you hit these hotspots without any added adventures. So, we asked Anne Banas of SmarterTravel.com how to stop a thief. She says hanging out in a crowded or otherwise popular place increases your chance of being pickpocketed, so be aware of your surroundings. Be careful if a stranger tries to make conversation. He may be trying to create a diversion so his partner can steal your wallet. To be extra safe, carry as little as possible. Stow your cash in a money belt and carry your handbag in your arms. Or create a dummy wallet with fake credit cards and keep it in an obvious place to satisfy thieves. Now check out these other travel safety tips from Anne.
