Who could forget those commercials--"Do you ever get that 'not so fresh' feeling?" Of course, by now we've all been told that we're best letting our va-jay-jays take care of themselves.
But now there's a new trend to freshen up--stemming from a centuries-old Korean remedy called chai-yok. Also known as a vaginal steam bath.
The idea is simple. Get naked, sit on an open seated stool, and wait as the steam rises from a bowling pot of mugwort tea, blended with wormwood and other herbs. Proponents claim the act can do anything from reduce stress and fight infections to clear hemorrhoids and regular menstrual cycles. Some even believe it can aid infertility.
So does it work? Well, your guess is as good as mine. There is no scientific evidence so far it works or doesn't and most Western doctors have never heard of it.
We asked OB/GYN Dr. Lissa Rankin, who recently researched the procedure for an article. While she's never recommended a vaginal steam bath to her patients or tried one herself, she does see one potential drawback. "The one danger I would warn of is heat," she says. "Steam could certainly hurt!"
Most of the spas offering this treatment right now are in California. (No shock there!) They can range from twenty-dollars to seventy-five. Or you can buy your own home steam bath for three hundred and thirty.
Personally, I think I'll stick to facials...
