Madison: Maintaining Confidence

We all have those moments when things are going especially terribly and we feel like the world is going to cave in on us. Whether it has to do with school, work, friends, or family, life can be stressful and can really put a damper on our day. They say confidence is 90% of the game, but how can we gather up the courage to play when times are tough?

Here’s how. First of all, start your day off right. When you wake up, give yourself a chance to adjust to the new day, don’t just jump out of bed and start your day in a rush. Once you’re feeling refreshed, take a browse through your closet and put on a new outfit. Run a blow dryer through that beautiful hair and pick out a hot pair of shoes. I’m a definite advocate of the “look good feel good” policy; so the better you look, the better you’ll feel. Then take a look in the mirror; you look good don’t you? Yeah you do!

While you’re getting ready to go, put some feel good music on. Definitely something you can move to, maybe some “Electric Feel” or “Moves Like Jagger,” whatever gets you going works. Then grab a light but fulfilling breakfast, like a Chobani with some fruit on the side. And as much as we all love coffee, how about trying a Chai tea, which is known to promote weight loss, lower cholesterol, and younger looking skin?

Next, put some pep in your step! If you’re on your way to work or school, keep your head up, shoulders back, and walk quickly without rushing. You can tell a lot about a person’s confidence from the way they walk, and when you walk with a purpose, you’ll look significant to others and feel better about yourself. Who’s that gorgeous individual with the sexy strut and winning smile? Oh wait, that’s you.

Now, sometimes we have people around us who make our lives difficult. Most times, we can’t avoid these individuals due to certain circumstances. However, instead of letting them bother you, approach them with a smile and don’t sweat the small stuff. There’s no point in getting upset about someone who holds no importance in your life. Their opinion doesn’t matter, and even if it did, you’re too confident to let it affect you anyway! On the other hand, for the people who are important in your life, compliment them and make them feel good. By staying positive and talking positively about others, you’ll help bring their ego up as well as your own. Plus, who doesn’t love someone who gives out compliments like free candy?

As for the rest of the day, whether you’re at work or just meeting up with some friends, stay focused, be present, and contribute to conversation. Don’t be afraid to give your views on a subject or say how you feel because it’s likely that people will appreciate your ideas. Also, by being present in conversation, you’ll feel less sluggish and more confident in your beliefs. You don’t always have to say something especially intelligent or groundbreaking, sometimes just cracking a joke is enough. Any excuse to smile is a good one.

Lastly, don’t be afraid of confidence. Presenting yourself as a confident person doesn’t mean you’re cocky or arrogant. Confidence is being certain about yourself and your abilities as well as accepting who you are as a person. We’re all human and are all flawed, but when we can look past our flaws and embrace them is when we are truly confident in who we are. Of course, it’s inevitable that you will experience difficult times in life that can damage your ego. However, know your potential, know your strengths, and approach each day with a smile on your face and your head held high. Who knows, it could turn out to be a day that changes your life forever.
