Help! My Parents Are Divorced And My Dad Doesn't Understand I Have a Life...
Question:
Hi, my name's Elizabeth and I have daddy issues. You see, my dad is 72. I know that's old,but heres the part where it starts to kick in. I told my dad I wanted a job,but he tells me to get one that works around his schedule, cuz i see him on Friday and Saturday. My parents are divorced but its absolutely impossible to get a job like that. After that, it set off a whole argument about me having to consider him all the time. He gets so horrible that he brings up support in our faces like we are to ignorant to remember. I need help. How can I talk to him?????

Answer:
Hi Elizabeth!
Thanks for writing in and asking for help with you and Dad.  Finding the balance between taking care of ourselves and others (especially family) can be very difficult and emotional.  While your father's needs are important and demanding, it's also necessary for him to consider your life situation and schedule.  Without a mutual understanding of what both of you need, arguments and conflicts begin to brew.  I would encourage you to sit with your dad and acknowledge that he has expectations of you.  Gently explain to him that you always try your best to meet his needs but you may fall short at times.  Ask for his understanding and support for your schedule.  Try to keep the volume of your voice low and the tone upbeat.  Remember that successful relationships are made with love, healthy negotiations and lots of effort!  Always know that you can seek the support and guidance of a licensed therapist if your struggles continue.  Good luck!
