With all the snarky comments when First Lady Michelle Obama decided to go sleeveless, you'd think she'd chosen to appear on the White House lawn topless. I think it was just jealousy. After all, we are a nation fighting obesity and, let's admit it, an epidemic of chicken arms. I know, I'm a yoga teacher and I'm not supposed to notice or care about those things. Well, I'm also a woman and, specifically, a woman who used to be 40 pounds heavier with chicken wings that would make the Colonel proud. I'm also someone who doesn't want to hide her top under layers of fabric every time she goes out. Instead of thinking about KFC whenever I looked in the mirror or people saw me, I wanted something more along the lines of a LBD (little black dress)-oriented focus.
Now, by golly, we can have what we want. I sent my chicken arms squawking back to the coop by doing the following yoga move and I pass the savings on to you. You'll turn flab to fab if you commit to it on a daily basis and next time you see Michelle representing the fit and stylisth women among us- you'll take off that shawl and flaunt what you've got!
CORE POSE: COBRA WAVES
This move directly works the biceps and triceps because it requires resistance as you push up and also as you slow your wave back down to the ground.
Begin on your belly, feet pointed firmly into the mat, tailbone lengthening and low belly toned. Plant your hands, fingers wide, under your elbows. Roll the shoulders onto your back, forehead to the floor (or a block, beginners). Inhale here.

On your exhale, slowly peel yourself off the floor as you press the hands and fingertips, legs and hips down, and move the sides of your waist, shoulders, neck and head back.
Come up only as high as your arm strength or lower back flexibility will take you.

On your exhale, don’t flop—slowly wave down into your starting position, resisting with your hands and arms even as you lower.
Do 5-15 rounds of your Cobra Wave, then press back into a Child’s Pose with arms stretching long in front of you to make sure those new muscles build long and lean.
