YOU ASKED: What can I do to boost my metabolism?
YOU ASKED: What can I do to boost my metabolism?

...I quit smoking & I eat right but I seem to be gaining weight anyway. Help!

Answer: Your body is like an engine and needs constant sources (but not excessive amounts) of fuel. The very best way to boost your metabolism so that your body can perform optimally both physically and mentally is to consume some foods and beverages every few hours. There's no magical number of hours that should pass in between eating occasions. However, a good rule of thumb is to eat relatively small meals and snacks every few hours (3 or 4 is ideal for most). Having a nutrient-dense breakfast (for example, even something as simple as a hard boiled egg, banana, and 1 cup of skim milk) and consuming meals and snacks at spaced intervals throughout the day is the best way to show your body you're not starving it of fuel. Make sure you eat when you're hungry, but not ravenous. If you tend to skip meals or go more than 4 or 5 hours in between meals and snacks (and often find yourself feeling really hungry), you're likely to suffer both mentally and physically. You may feel sapped, lethargic, tired, and feel like taking a nap. You may also get to the point where you're excessively hungry--and you know this can make you want to eat everything in sight and consume tempting, high calorie, nutrient-poor treats you often try to limit.

It's also important to remember that many people tend to pack on pounds when they quit smoking because they often replace the missing cigarettes with food. To minimize this, be sure to keep a daily food log, recording everything you eat and drink. This can help you identify what and how much you're really eating, and to see any trouble spots--eg late night eating, going too long between eating occasions and getting ravenous, etc. Keep on hand some sugar-free mints, gum, or breath strips to help you reduce your risks for turning to food when you're not truly hungry. Last but not least, a great way to keep your metabolism revved up and to boost it even more is to do regular exercise--especially weight training that builds lean muscle tissue and helps you be an efficient body fat burner. Two to three sessions a week, working all the key muscle groups, should do the trick.
