It’s out with the old and in with the new as 2012 arrives! Take the New Year’s arrival as an opportunity to get organized and creative with home décor. Repurposing what you already have on hand is the best way to save money and show off some one-of-a-kind style.
Here are five easy ideas that take typical household items and transform them into beautiful décor to display throughout the year.
1. Book-Inspired Centerpieces
If you’re a bookworm with an e-reader now, you may find that your old books are collecting more dust than ever before. Though we’re all for donating them to a library, save a few choice hardcovers and get creative. We love the idea of turning them into mini shelf displays, hide-a-key vessels or even coffee table centerpieces.

As big book fans we like creating funky centerpieces with our reads – cover a few choice ones with different fabrics or cardstock, then create a layered look.
2. Unexpected Vases
No one said a fancy crystal glass is the only pretty vase out there. We love the idea of using mismatched tea cups to showcase flowers. The best part about this look is how inexpensive it is! Blooms look best cut short and clustered together – we used roses here.
But inexpensive flowers like carnations can look great too. See what works for your wallet when you're shopping at the grocery store.
If you find you’ve got more coffee cans or fish bowls around try using those! Remember, anything that can hold water can hold flowers.

3. Plant Art
You don’t have to just showcase plants in vases, either. There’s always an option to frame them! Create an organic art gallery in your home by framing leaves or petals. Take old frames, spray paint them black (or any other color) so that they’re cohesive, and then frame assorted plants in them. Hang on your wall and you’ve got a great look for the price of a can of spray paint!
4. Wine Bottle Candles
Our new favorite art supply? Chalkboard paint. We use it on everything from wine bottles to walls.
Create dramatic candle centerpieces by painting various bottles and sticking a short tapered candle in the opening, then clustering them together. We also use this technique for table markers at low-key celebrations.
Get organized with this paint and create a space on a wall in your home (we like the kitchen) and use it to jot down notes. You can erase, edit and check off as you please.

5. Color Wheel Design
For the moms out there who may be sick of seeing half used crayons go to waste why not create some funky art to hang in kids’ rooms or in the den? We love the idea of melting some crayons to a canvas. Super simple, colorful and a great way to get rid of left-over crayons the kids have forgotten about.
