6 Tech Reminders That Could Save Your Holiday
What am I forgetting? AHHHHHH...where are the batteries?

Tape? Check.  Wrapping Paper? Check. Batteries... Batteries?!  It’s 5:00am Christmas morning.  The kids are shaking all the presents under the tree, pleading: “Come on Mom, just one…PLLLEEEAAASSSEEE?”  A satisfied smile crosses your face as you anticipate their cute little faces when they see the perfect gift you picked out for them.  Then without warning---that dreaded feeling hits you. You forgot the batteries!

Today’s techno toys and gadgets require accessories to use them.  Here are a few simple extras to pick up, that will make your perfect present work right out of the box…

Re-chargeable batteries and battery chargers:  These little “Holiday Savers” are a must have for the big day and is a good way to go GREEN. Many chargers will fit multiple sizes-AA, AAA and C.  So don’t forget to pick some up to add to your kiddos’ stocking.

Digital Cameras:  Buying a new camera for that special person? Besides extra re-chargeable batteries consider picking up an extra memory card or two (Not all digital cameras come with one on board).  It’s a great way to ensure they can click like crazy right out of the box, and not run into the dreaded “card full” error.  Also consider a portable card reader so your shutterbug is ready to take those pictures on the go.

iPod or MP3 player: Consider a better pair of headphones to complement that snazzy new media player device. Like these cute and fashionable headphones.   While iPods and MP3 players typically come with a set of headphones in the box, they are often poor quality and uncomfortable to wear.  Noise-cancelling headphones will go a long way to take your present from great to AWESOME.

Printers: Don’t forget to pick up all the extras so your special someone can start using their printer right away.  Printer paper, extra ink, USB cable (many manufacturers don’t include one in the box) and even photo paper will make great gifts or stocking stuffers.

Cell phones/Smart phones:  Buying a new smart phone for your hubby? All those devices need to get charged, and do you notice how they all have their own cable, so the surge strip on his side of the bed is overflowing with a jumble of cords?  Before you pick up that universal charging caddy from the electronics store checkout aisle, STOP!  You can do better.  While the AViiQ Travel Charging Station ($80) is great for gadget gurus on the go, it’s also genius as an everyday charging and organization waypoint.  Charge up to four devices with just one A/C outlet, even an iPad, and when you’re ready to go just zip up the small case to never leave behind another stray charger.  Imagine the joy of being able to plug that lamp in again.

HDMI or Video cables: You finally broke down and bought that coveted flat screen television!  Many manufactures include cheap cables in the box, or sometimes only for a few connection types.  Make sure to look at the equipment you own and plan how you are going to integrate your new TV into your existing setup.  Most cable or satellite boxes have HDMI outputs, which are the best type of connection, but older equipment may only have Component outputs.

Finally, when you buy a techno gadget, be sure to bust out the instructions.  We know, what a drag, but it’s the best way to know if you need additional equipment that wasn’t included with your purchase.  Also, make sure to plug in any electronics that need to be charged.  You don’t want the excitement of opening a new iPod to go to waste as the kids wait for it to be charged.

With just a few little extras, you can be the super gifter or the gift whisperer if you prefer.  Looking for more ways to take your gifting prowess from good to great?  We’re here to help!  Send us a note on Facebook (facebook.com/nerdsoncall) or email us at nerdchick@callnerds.com.
