simple home decor and party projects for father's day

He’s the guy that tosses the baseball around with the kids, wipes away tears and gives hugs… and this weekend—it’s time to make HIM feel special. Forget the mall and make something meaningful instead. With a little help from Mom, children can create their own one-of-a-kind gifts for Dad.

3 Father's Day Gifts Kids Can Make

1. Chalkboard Frame

Framed photos are always fabulous. For this simple project, the kids paint a wooden frame with chalkboard paint. Chalkboard paint is available at craft and home improvement stores. It’s pretty good proof—just paint a couple layers and let it “cure” for a day. For an added touch, score some scrabble tiles at the thrift store or find similar wooden letters at the craft store and spell a message out to Dad.

Add a favorite photo and kids can use chalk or chalk pens to write Dad a message or draw a picture… and then erase and change it up anytime they’re inspired.

2. Dollar Store Plate

Here’s a super CHEAP idea that’s a cinch. Grab a white plate at a dollar store or thrift store and some oil-based Sharpie pens. Kids can trace their hands on the plate… and write their names and the date. It makes a special (and permanent) Father’s Day gift and reminder that Dad can enjoy for future Father’s Days. Do a plate a year to create a fun collection.

3. ”All About My Dad” Printable Gift

This is a cool idea. Just print this out and let your child fill it out. There are places for kids to fill in how old dad is, and how much he weighs… favorite food and drink etc. Then add a 4 x 6 photo and pop in a frame. This makes a funny and sweet reminder Dad will enjoy reading and rereading.

Bowling Pin Vases: To make darling “bowling pin” vases to coordinate—spray paint “pre-used” glass soda bottles white, add some rik rac and a flower. It’s a fun way to add blooms to your celebration… and it’s still pretty “masculine.”

Whatever you and and the kids choose to do for Father's Day-- keep it simple and homemade and Dad is sure to love it!
