You've finally decided to take the plunge with Google+, but your entire life is over on Facebook, right? So how can you take everything from Facebook and begin anew over on Google+? We've found a few tricks to make the transition easier than ever. Here's how.
It's all about who you know
The first thing you'll want to do is import all of your Facebook contacts and invite them to Google+, right? Well, maybe not all of them — but it's easier to do them all in one lump rather than one at a time. Getting your contacts from Facebook into Google requires a little workaround at this time, since Facebook isn't playing nice.
You'll need to sign up for a Yahoo Mail account, if you don't already have one. Once you sign up and log in, look under contacts and import. You'll see a Facebook icon. Click this icon, and you'll sync your Facebook contacts (their email addresses, at least) to your Yahoo account.
Go back to your Google+ account, and click on the Circles and the Find People option. You'll see a Yahoo button. Click on that icon, and you'll be able to import your Yahoo contacts and put them into your circles. (This will also send your friends an invite to Google+, if they aren't already on board.) See? As simple as 1, 2, 3.
Moving your pictures, made easy
There are several ways to export and import your pictures, but thankfully, this method doesn't require any fancy steps. To do this one, you'll need to install the Move Your Photos extension into your Chrome browser.
Once installed, simply click on the little orange bus and go from there. You'll need to log in to your Facebook and Google+ accounts, but the process is painless and gets the job done. While your albums and photos will be moved over into Picasa's web service (run by Google), it's up to you to share them with your newly created Google+ circles. You won't be able to pick and choose what gets moved, and you'll need to delete any duplicates already on Picasa once you complete the move.
Videos — but only if you must
Videos are a part of our everyday lives now, and chances are that you'll have some videos on Facebook that you want to migrate to Google+ as well. This is the most tedious part of moving over. The only way to transfer your videos at this point is to download your Facebook data. To do this, go to your account settings and click on the small link that says "download a copy" of your Facebook data.
Once Facebook is done generating this archive of data, it sends you an email with a link for downloading the information. This may take a while, so don't hold your breath. Once the download is complete, unzip the archive and find the videos you want to share. Drag and drop them into Google+ under your profile page. Look for the option to upload new videos under the video menu.
What you see is what you get
Unfortunately, even all these steps will leave something behind on Facebook. You won't be able to transfer all the banter, comments, and friends' data from Facebook to Google+. While that's a definite downside, it won't hurt for long. After a few weeks, you'll have plenty of banter and shared items from friends on Google+ to entertain you. And best of all, you'll be on the up-and-coming cutting edge of what could be the next big thing online.
