Fall is coming quickly and there's no better way to bring in the Autumn then to attend a Fall festival. With Thanksgiving and Halloween just around the corner, harvest festivals and Fall activities are great ways to get yourself, your home, and your families prepared for the Fall season.
The word "Harvest" actually comes from the Anglo-Saxon word harverfest, which translates to Autumn. It directly refers to the season in which farmers would literally reap and gather their wheat and crops. Harvest festivals also came about because of people’s appreciation for the food grown from the land. The weather’s transition from warm to cold allows Autumn to be a primary harvest season, bringing about new vegetation, the most prominent being pumpkins and apples. Nowadays we focus on eating, activities with our friends and families, and enjoying the changing of the leaves, hoping to savor these last warm and colorful days, knowing that Summer has passed and Winter is inevitably drawing near. There is a plethora of activities at Fall festivals to get yourself involved in during the Fall months including spending the day at a pumpkin patch, making your own apple cider, going on a hay ride, apple picking, visiting animals at a petting zoo, or various arts and crafts. There’s nothing better than buying a pumpkin for your doorstep to prepare for the trick-or-treaters, or picking fresh apples and making warm apple cider to enjoy on a chilly Autumn night.
Halloween is always a greatly loved holiday, and preparing for it is half the fun, especially attending a costume contest or carving pumpkins. Thanksgiving preparations are also in order during the fall months, and bringing the kids to a harvest festival is a great way to teach them about the original Thanksgiving, and most importantly, to be thankful for all they have. Take the kids for an afternoon out to Hallowpalooza in Tower Point Park, Norfolk, VI. There will be a pumpkin ring toss, children’s crafts, and special give-aways like apple cider, Halloween candy, and spider wings.
In the meantime, make sure to take a moment to notice the new colors and the cool breeze that will begin to appear in a couple of weeks, and let it be a reminder of how thankful we all should be for the year that will soon pass, and for the new year that is only a few months away.
