While we certainly don't wish any martital strife on Will and Kate, even royal marriages can be hard work and may need some advice now and again. So if you were to stock the royal library with one self-help book to keep their marriage strong what would it be?
We asked relationship experts -- and some GalTime readers for their suggestions:
Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapist Daniela Tempesta, MSW, LCSW recommends "Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love" by Author Sue Johnson, EdD, to help Kate and Will seal that emotional bond they'll need with such a high pressure marriage.
"This book offers readers approachable lessons on how to be more emotionally present, open, and responsive to your partner in a way that strengthens the foundations of the bond," she says. "All relationships are challenging, but a royal marriage under the microscope of the media is particularly vulnerable to unique challenges. Reading 'Hold Me Tight' will give Will and Kate the tools necessary to nurture an enduring bond that can sustain the pressures from outside."
Couples and Individual Therapist Nathan Gehlert, PhD, LPC, would give them "Getting the Love You Want" by Harville Hendrix--to head off any future marital conflicts.
"Every couple experiences conflict and disconnection at some point in their relationship - most couples don't know what to do when it first happens," he says. "The book helps prepare a couple for that - normalizing the experience of conflict, helps readers understand the nature of their conflict, and gives readers practical tools for empathic communication."
Claire Ryland suggests "Love Again: Creating Relationships without Blame" by Jan Harrell, PhD, and Alan Robins, Ph.D.
"Will and Kate will face so many challenges and will need to find a way through the struggles every couple faces. This book has everything contained in it. The approach is so simple, and yet so powerful - and will guide anyone not only to the relationship they want to have, but through the deep, transformative, soul wrestling, turn yourself inside out process of creating a new and amazing life. Which is what we wish them!"
And 'Lee' suggests "Your LovePath" by Joe Beam
"Based on their family history (at least with the brothers), it's apparently very difficult to be in a royal marriage and I'd imagine that if they have trouble the people around them might just tell them that they're not to blame but that the spouse is," says Lee. "With this book they could look internally based on things about their relationship they might not even realize instead of what those surrounding them might say. Joe also talks about how couples teach each other to lie and how that sets up a storm in the future."
And lastly - Zia Holte suggests a classic to help them understand each other. "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" by Dr John Gray.
"THE best, most succinct book on the differences between men and women, and some really practical ways to navigate them successfully," she insists. "I've yet to find a better book - one that did so much for my relationship and helps me even now with raising my son."
Hmmm. Perhaps Dr. Gray could do a special edition for the royal couple: Princes are from Mars and Princesses are from Venus?
