The Do's & Don'ts of Webcams for Online Dating
The Do's & Don'ts of Webcams for Online Dating

Online dating used to be something you didn't talk about. But these days pretty much all my friends have done it--and why not? There are some hot prospects online that may never set foot in your local bar. So how else you gonna hook 'em? And hey - unlike meeting someone in a bar, with online dating you get the full 411 on their profile before you ever get asked "What's your sign?"

Of course some people argue that a still photo or a list of attributes won't let you see the real person behind the screen. You can't see their mannerisms, hear their voice, learn if there's any chemistry between you. And if you're more of a talker than a typer, you might find yourself flailing.

But not anymore. These days, dating websites, like SpeedDate.com are now facilitating webcam use for those first tricky encounters. So forget typing that long winded email and talk to your potential suitor face to face--albeit through a computer screen. In just a short conversation you'll get a chance to size up the chemistry and decide if you want to take the next step--and meet up in real life.

But while webcams are a great addition to online dating--they can also be awkward and terrifying if you're not used to them. So we asked Dan Abelon, co-founder and president of SpeedDate.com for some ideas on making a good impression when you step into the webcam limelight.

· Keep up your Appearance.  Making a first impression in terms of appearance is critical.  This is your time to shine so dress up and look your best, as if you were going out for a night on the town.

· Look into the Camera.  Nothing is more annoying than having a video chat with someone who is staring at their keyboard.  Eyes are the windows to the soul – so make sure you know exactly where your camera is located and look directly into it.

· Pay Attention to Your Background.  If you are decked out to the nines but just over your shoulder is a pile of dirty dishes you won’t get a second date.  Make sure your background is either neutral or pleasing to the eye.

· Be prepared.  Have three topics or questions prepared to make best use of your chat time – remember the goal is getting to know someone to see if you want to take it to the next level.

And lastly--a couple of my own suggestions. Test your equipment before you get started--nothing like technical difficulties to get things off on the wrong foot! And make sure your background is noise-free. Barking dogs or screaming kids aren't great ambience for any virtual first date.
