So even though being budget conscious is a usual theme of GalTime’s money section, we are all too aware of how good it can feel to splurge every so often. There are some items for which higher quality requires quite a bit more cash, and the extra dollar signs are completely worth it.
For this post, we conducted an informal survey of GalTime readers and then asked our money-saving guru, Andrea Woroch about what items qualify as good splurges appropriate for the summer months. So here you have it, ladies, the three items readers and experts think deserve a little extra attention from your paycheck this season:
Sunglasses: Woroch reminds us that skimping on sunglasses is detrimental to the health of your eyes and since you wear sunglasses nearly every day in the summer, spending extra money on a pair of shades makes good financial sense. However, she warns to still be cost conscious in the store: “Don't splurge on the first pair of designer shades you find. Try out different styles at your local sunglass store and then compare prices online among specialty shops and department stores. Look for deals and coupon codes from sites like CouponSherpa.com, especially if you need prescription sunglasses,” Woroch says.
Swim Suits: Sand, chlorine, sunscreen and heat are all harsh elements on swimsuits and for kids that spend countless hours with each, it makes sense to find fairly inexpensive suits for the season. But for adults who have a nice vacation ahead or who are looking for a super flattering swim suit, a little extra money is worth it! Woroch says that a quality, even if a little pricey, swimsuit will usually last a few seasons with proper care and suggests, “If you are looking for a new, stylish suit, it is worth the splurge for a quality brand that won't stretch out or fall apart after one summer of swimming and sunbathing. For those looking for quality on a budget, scope out flash sale sites that offer designer brands for less like Gilt Group and Haute Look.” (hyperlink to Gilt and Haute under the names!)
Sandals: “Since the hot weather causes feet to sweat and swell, shoes can become, stretched out, stained and smelly by the end of the season- yuk! A new pair of sandals for the summer is clearly an essential purchase. Quality shoes offer comfort and support and happy feet will make your summer days and nights more pleasant,” Woroch says. Plus, a good pair can show off a new pedicure and last you well into the warmer days of September.
