Today, entertainment for kids is a lot different than it was only ten years ago. With iPads, Wii’s, and other learning devices like Leap Frogs children are plugged-in and learning through more technology than ever before. Although there are some great devices that can help children learn and grow never underestimate the simplicity of some paint and a sheet of white paper.
If you’re in the Hamptons and have kids K-4, they can join the after school Winter Art Program. Look at all the details here. Former grade school teacher, Dr. Wren, gave GalTime some insight of all the areas where art work can play a beneficial role in children’s growth, as she saw in her classroom.
Motor Skills and Hand-Eye Coordination
- Writing on lines, coloring in the lines, and connect the dots help children improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Beneficial for children in K-3 who do not have a lot of control over their little hands and fingers.
- Consistency with these types of activities develops their control.
Spacial Intelligence
- Spacial Intelligence is the ability to present the spatial world internally in your mind.
- When a child is given an assignment such as draw a picture of your house, or your bedroom, or the street you live on, etc, the child is really being asked to illustrate a mental process.
- Depending upon the accuracy of the illustration, the teacher is able to assess the strength of that process and ultimately how well developed that child's spacial intelligence is.
Social Skills and Working Together With Other Children
- You get the most cooperation out of children when they have an art assignment (painting, drawing, cut and paste, paper mache', etc.).
- Art fostered a sense of community among the children because they were more likely and better able to share and compromise.
Creativity and Expression
- Children may not have an appropriate vocabulary to express their thoughts or feelings. But with art, children can say all that words cannot say.
Don’t forget that art is not limited to paint and paper, art forms include music and theater which are also extremely beneficial for children’s social skills, creativity and expression.
