4 Simple Ways To Keep Back-To-School Stress-Free
4 Simple Ways To Keep Back-To-School Stress-Free

The days begin to get shorter and the weather starts to cool off as algebra and astronomy slowly replace those peaceful poolside times. Though shopping for those fantastic fall clothes and getting geared up for a new school year can be exciting, such hectic and often rushed preparation can also lead to lots of stress for both parents and children.

Whether it’s your only child’s first day of kindergarten or your fifth’s last first day of high school, falling into that back-to-school routine can be quite a crazy time. To help out all the parents and kids, we’ve assembled a list of helpful tips with the assistance of Richard Bavaria, former high school English teacher and current Vice President of Educational Outreach for Sylvan Learning.

First, says Dr. Bavaria, parents need to “be positive.” Kids are certainly not oblivious to a parent’s mood or attitude, so Dr. Bavaria advises them to “keep it light.” Rather than telling your child over and over again about how you dreaded every single day of eighth grade, discuss the more positive aspects of your adolescent school years such as your favorite teachers and good times with your best friends.

Next, Dr. Bavaria urges parents to “set goals” with their children. By aiming for small and realistic improvements, parents and children can create feelings of success together. “Goals should require a bit of a stretch to create a feeling of accomplishment.”

Help prepare your kids (and yourself) for the back-to-school season. From visiting your kindergartener’s new school to reviewing the weekly calendar with your teenager, heading into a new year fully equipped and organized can make the transition infinitely easier for both you and your child.

Finally, Dr. Bavaria tells parents to “help establish healthy routines.” Like being prepared, “routines make youngsters feel secure and confident.” By more gradually making the change back to a busier and more structured schedule, everyone in the family will feel less overwhelmed by the start of the school year.

The back-to-school season can be a crazy and challenging time for everyone. However, by being just a little more organized, this exciting time of new beginnings for everyone can go from frantic to fun!
