5 Creative Ways to Surprise Mom on Mother's Day
5 Creative Ways to Surprise Mom on Mother's Day

Want a great idea for Mom for Mother’s Day that will really impress this year? Now that you’re older, macaroni necklaces and homemade coupons just don’t cut it. For a fun day in with Mom that won’t cost you too much, will impress her and will pamper you both, create your own spa at home.

What mother doesn’t love to get pampered for her special day? But why go to an expensive spa when you could just create your own spa day at home. Martha Stewart offers many creative spa ideas that you can make your own.

First make up some of these great spa goodies then create a playlist with soothing songs your mom will love, grab some good magazines and plan for a day together. Catch up with your mom and get to spend time alone that both of your busy days don’t allow for!

Homemade Spa Products

Body Scrub

When followed by a moisturizing lotion, your mom’s skin will be as soft as her baby’s when she tries your homemade scrub. Mix one cup of your mom’s favorite flavor body oil with two cups of Epsom salts, sea salts or organic cane sugar (from roughest to finest grain). You could even add a spice or zest for color and fragrance if you like.

Relaxing Foot Bath

For a soothing bath, mix one cup of Epsom salts with one half cup whole milk and two green tea bags.  For a hydrating soak, combine one cup whole milk, one quarter cup honey and rose petals, or for an invigorating mix, blend one quarter cup Epsom salts, ten mint leaves and four sprigs of rosemary.

Bath Fizzies

These effervescent treats are easier to make than you believe and they're a fast fix. Try different colors and smells to find one that is perfect for your mom. Sift one and three quarters cup baking soda, one cup citric acid and two cups cornstarch and to make different colors and pour one cup of the mix into a bowl. Fill spritz bottles with water and add food coloring to them then spritz the powder in the bowl, stirring after each mix, until you like the color. Check the mix with your fingers as you spray and when it can be tightly packed add five drops of whatever essential oil is your mom’s favorite. After the mix has been stirred well, pack the fizzies tightly into whatever mold you are using. For an easy mold, use a silicon ice tray since fizzies can be packed tightly, but the bendable molds allow you to get them out easily without breaking them. Let the molds set for two hours before removing your treats!

Healthy, but Yummy Spa Snacks

Honey-Yogurt Dip

Yogurt and honey makes a perfect snack. Try mixing some of the sticky sweet with Greek yogurt to cut the tart or mix it with a flavor like vanilla for a sweeter treat. You can even add some fresh berries to lighten up your snack.

Coconut Covered Mangoes

Slice a mango into wedges lengthwise and roll them in toasted coconut. You can buy the topping at the store or, for a fresher taste, bake shredded coconut at 350 degrees for eight to ten minutes or until golden brown. Leave the coconut shredded or pulse it in a food processor to make it even finer.

Sweet Smoothies

Once you are relaxing in your robes and slippers, transport yourself to the poolside at your favorite spa with a delicious smoothie. Blend about three cups of your favorite fruit with a cup and a half of apple or orange juice and either one cup of yogurt or your favorite sherbet. For a quick trick to make your smoothies hold up better, try freezing the fruit before you blend it. This will keep your mix thicker and your flavors stronger while also keeping your fruit fresh longer.

Mango Parfait

For dessert, whip up this healthier and more unique version of a parfait to wow your mom with little effort. Make a mango puree by blending two mangos with a cup of orange juice. Spoon two tablespoons of the puree into a glass and top with a quarter cup of Greek yogurt and then top both layers with toasted coconut. Repeat this until the glass is full then enjoy!

For the perfect gift to cap the day together, make your mom a day spa gift basket with scented soaps, candles and lotions and some monogrammed slippers, plush towels, and a wood hairbrush to give her the relaxation she has always dreamed of. You can even pack up some of your homemade goodies to go along with anything you buy from the store!
