Every child that comes into your family brings with him or her a unique energy and purpose. Like a carefully woven tapestry of love and loving, each additional life - whether by blood, adoption, or marriage - adds to the beauty that has been created before the arrival of the new child.

Every day with that child is precious. Every day with that child is unique. And every day with that child is an opportunity to both teach and learn, as the number of days you have left together diminishes even while the child's future becomes his or her present.

Remember that your child chose you to be the navigator, the compass, the adult responsible for guidance and strength. Do not abdicate your authority, but do embrace it with loving and nurturing.

Treat your child with respect if you want to be respected by your child. Treat your child with love if you want your child to be loving. Treat your child with compassion if you want your child to be sensitive to the needs of others.

And give your child the room and permission not to be perfect, but to strive for the best he or she can be, whatever that is.

Be accepting of who your child is, and do not see your child as an extension of you, but rather a reflection of your best efforts. Today, see your child for the precious gift he or she is, and tell your child loud and clear - I LOVE YOU!"
