We Love Them Both Equally, Right?
Naturally, we love both of our parents equally. However, when it comes to their special day of recognition, people are spending more money on their mothers than their fathers. Why is that? Are the studies showing that mothers are more loved than fathers? Well, I wouldn’t go that far…
This year, consumers were projected to spend $16.3 billion on moms and did, in fact, surpass that expectation. The expended spending on father’s day is estimated to be $11.1 billion on our dads this year.
Why are we spending more money on Mom than Dad?
Personal Life Coach Laura Ann Allahverdi says, “Women have a list of things they want, accessories, jewelry, cooking gadgets, etc. Things they don't really NEED. Men, on the other hand, don't care as much about presents and usually don't keep a list of things they WANT, they don't use accessories etc.”
Author and Publisher, Mandy Williams explains with a little more detail:
-
At the risk of stereotyping mothers and fathers - mothers are more emotional and fathers are more pragmatic. Children want to celebrate with gifts that touch upon the emotions and sensibilities of the recipient. Gifts for mom would tend to be more flamboyant, where for dad they would be practical. And "impressive" gifts cost more than sensible ones.
-
Children typically grow up spending more time with their mothers, so they tend to know the "things" that she may like but has not bought for herself because her priority is her children - therefore it is only logical the gift would be something that would be purchased. Children typically grow up with the father being more of a provider and having limited time for themselves and their family - therefore the gifts often involve the spending of time. (Letting him play golf all day, going to a movie together, barbequing, etc.)
-
And that does not take into account mere math - the number of single moms where the child has minimal/no contact with the father, which is greater than the number of single dads where the child has minimal/no contact with the mother.
