Great Gals: Desiree Jordan | Fun Stuff

With a soulful sound and a contagious laugh, Desiree Jordan has quickly become a rising musical performer in Washington, D.C. Though quiet and reserved in social settings, when put in front of an audience, she explodes into an engaging and impressive musician. As a twenty-four year old singer and songwriter, she has confidence beyond her years and unshakable faith in her future.

 A self-described “alternative soul” performer, Desiree’s passion for powerful music began at an early age. Growing up she would assist her grandmother in leading the local choir, followed by a stint in an all-girls musical group, “HeavenSent.”

Now on her own, Desiree performs for D.C. bars, coffee shops, and even performed a Christmas show at her local Macy’s. While thankful for any opportunity to share her talent with others, Desiree understands that Washington may not be the best place to launch a musical career.

“Washington, D.C. has been a great start for my music career, but the main focus of the area is political,” Desiree says. “Though, there are definitely some areas of D.C. that are really artistic, and it’s my goal to perform in those areas at least once.”

While admitting that D.C. may not be the most musically inclined city, Desiree has taken advantage of opportunities to get involved in the local music scene. Along with her occasional gigs, she serves as the Choir Director for her church, mentors young girls, and serves as a resource for other aspiring artists. Desiree’s main goal may be to become a well-known performing artist, but she also makes time to help others with the same dream. She understands the importance of believing in oneself and hopes to be an inspiration to others interested in a career in music.

“The most important step for aspiring artists is to believe in themselves,” she says without an ounce of doubt that she fully believes in her own ability to succeed. “Anyone can tell you that you have a gift or talent, but until you truly believe, without any doubt, that you’ve got it, you can’t move forward.”

Desiree immediately comes across as someone you should know – and not because she has an air of self-importance. In fact, it’s for the exact opposite reason. Her image is marked by her welcoming and kind smile; her eyes are eager and full of excitement. She is, as described, soulful. Her passion for life involves more than her appreciation for music. She hopes to accomplish her goals not only for her personal gratification, but to inspire others. As an artist, she wants her lyrics to speak to her listeners and always encourages audience participation.

“When I perform, I want to bare my soul to my audience… I want them to really get to know me, because that’s what connects them even further to the music I am performing. Through your music, you’re relatable,” she says. 

The passion she has for her career in the music industry is fueled by a desire to share her story with others. With a full time job and the mentioned volunteer activities, she still finds time to practice and hopes to constantly improve her performing style and sound. Desiree Jordan is, by all accounts, an outstanding young woman in Washington, D.C. Talented, graceful, and overcome with the desire to help others, she is one everyone should take note of – for as she declared, “my next stop is New York!”
