Dare to Try Something Different | Positive Thinking
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” For many people, the thought of that alone is scary enough, while others are only truly comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Truth is, consciously stepping out of our comfort zones can move us closer to achieving our dreams. When we do something that gives us that uneasy feeling—and that feeling is usually fear —we are challenging our limiting beliefs to do something we think we either “can’t” or “shouldn’t” do. It makes us face our fears head on, proving to ourselves that changing our thoughts about a situation will, in fact, change our emotions and ultimately our behavior.
Take, for example, Tony Robbins’ firewalk experience. Walking barefoot across burning coals certainly would qualify as scary, and would take most people out of their comfort zones. I haven’t done it….yet…but anyone I’ve talked to who has, says that silencing the self-talk—it’s “crazy,” “impossible,” “ridiculous”—and successfully walking shoeless across flaming coals made them realize that they were only bound by their beliefs about taking the action.
Luckily, we don’t have to walk across burning coals every day to get the empowerment that would come from doing something daring. So the next time you’re thinking about taking a step out of ordinary, and the voice inside your head says, “I would but…,” silence the voice and take the leap of faith. Chances are you won’t get burned.
