As a travel writer, whisking my way through Paris one month and climbing mountains in Arizona the next, I can tell you my jewelry of any value typically stays home when I’m on the road.

It may sound ridiculous, but the way I see it, why gamble with what you’ve got?

Wear your nice stuff when you are in a familiar environment, back home, not when you are on vacation.

Think about it— The point of traveling… for many people… is to relax, so why add the stress of worrying about whether your bling may be stolen (or even lost –we’re all human) while you’re in another city, state or country?

Odds are there won’t be gunmen breaking into your hotel to steal it, but theft is a major concern in certain tourist destinations.  Or, it’s entirely possible you’re going to take your coveted diamond earrings off one night, so you can wear a different pair that go better with this outfit or that.  So, what are you going to do with that bling when it’s not on your body? Sure, you could leave it in your room, but it might not be all that safe there–even in the safe–and you don’t want to risk carrying it around in a purse that could be taken if you become a target.

You can leave it in your room and hide it in your shoes or feminine hygiene box (most men won’t go near that with a ten-foot pole), or bring along a neat gadget to help act as a decoy, like this fake bottle of sunscreen or Rubik’s Cube Safe.

If you absolutely must wear your good stuff, make sure you have it insured before you go. Odds are that’s the case with what Kim Kardashian West had with her.

But if you want to be really careful, treat yourself to a new piece of jewelry–a simple band–to wear in place of your prized wedding ring when you’re on the road.  And leave everything else where you know it will be safe and sound.

At home.
