The DIY movement is not only for home improvements — we’re seeing a trend in wedding makeup too. After all, even Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, opted to do her own makeup for her royal wedding! It seems that everywhere you look people are empowering themselves to learn how to do things they’d usually hire professionals for.
While I know that the idea of doing your own bridal makeup may seem daunting, it doesn’t need to be. Sites like Pinterest make it possible to plan everything from your color scheme to your dream honeymoon destination to how you’ll create ‘your look.’ Know that it’s easy to do it yourself, either with practice, a lesson, or lots of video tutorials. Here are four quick tips that will help you feel more comfortable with being your own makeup artist on your big day.
Match Your Complexion
You’ve found your perfect match in life, now find your perfect match for your complexion! Sephora is really the best place to start. Their Color IQ system gives you a variety of options in terms of skin tone colors as well as coverage from sheer to heavy. My go-to foundation is Make Up For Ever’s Face & Body foundation. It’s not only sheer but it’s also waterproof and you can add on for a little extra coverage.
Determine Your Look
Winged Eyeliner? Smokey Eye? The Natural Look? Beachy? There are so many options! The best way to decide on the right look for you is by flipping through magazines or by using Pinterest to track your ideas. You’ll also find inspiration there if you’d like a little guidance.
Learn From the Pros
This is a great time to get a mini-lesson from an expert. Sephora’s in-store studio and Make Up For Ever’s Make Up School ($25 per class) are my favorite places for brush-ups or full-on lessons on the latest tips and trends. You can drop in and learn first hand how to do something you may not know.
If you want to learn from the privacy of your own home, I recommend perusing the websites of Kevin James Bennett, an emmy-award winning makeup artist, and Cara Brook of maskcara, Allure Magazine’s 2013 Beauty Blogger of the year. Their sites are a wealth of information; between their product reviews and YouTube tutorials, you’ll be a sitting pretty in no time!
